Emerging Technologies for E-Waste Recycling and Resource Recovery

Since electronic e-waste poses major global environmental and resource issues, its fast rise calls for improved recycling and recovery solutions. Emerging technologies are changing e-waste management by means of effective resource recovery, environmental hazard reduction, and circular economy concepts promotion. While chemical methods like hydrometallurgy and ecologically friendly solvents promote the recovery of precious metals with little environmental damage, advanced sorting systems using artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics increase the accuracy of material separation. Recovering precious metals like copper and gold is made feasible by using bioleaching and microbiological techniques. Thermal techniques including pyrolysis and plasma arc systems can safely break down hazardous materials while retrieving energy and metals. By improving availability and scalability in underdeveloped areas, decentralized and modular recycling solutions meant for low-resource settings assist to complement these advancements. Blockchain for traceability combined with artificial intelligence for process optimization enhances responsibility and efficiency of e-waste management systems. This chapter investigates present advancements in e-waste recycling technology and their capacity to change resource recovery policies, so improving sustainability and lowering the environmental impact of electronic waste. This underlines the requirement of changing these technologies for various infrastructure and financial environments for the worldwide influence.
