Introduction to E-Waste: Definition, Scope and Significance

Electronics waste (E-Waste) is one of the fastest growing waste streams on the planet as a consequence of new electronic advances, rising consumer demand, and electronic product life cycle limitations. The purpose of this chapter is to explain everything about E-Waste based on its definition, its classification, its source and lastly, the environmental and human health risks associated with its improper disposal. It also examines the global trends in the generation of E-Waste with the regional disparities and the problems facing different economies in managing e-waste. The hazardous material presents in E-Waste, including heavy metals and toxic chemicals, constitutes a great environmental and health threat if it is not properly processed or disposed of appropriately. The chapter further discusses the contribution that recyclable materials play in the E-Waste industry and focuses on the economic possibility of extracting valuable and rare earth metals as formal recycling systems. Additionally, it discusses the convention of international regulation, national policy, and corporate responsibility to reduce E-Waste Pollution. The contribution includes highlighting important strategies such as extended producer responsibility (EPR), circular economy principles, and consumer awareness programs for sustainable E-Waste management. Global efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of E-Waste can promote responsible recycling practices and strengthen regulatory frameworks and, in the process, reduce the environmental footprint of E-Waste and improve resource recovery and economic chances.
