Omics Approaches in Crop Science: Transcriptomics, Proteomics, and Metabolomics for Enhanced Crop Traits
摘要
Evolving the science of omics transformed crop science by offering three methods, namely transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, to provide systemic knowledge about the mechanisms of biological regulations influencing plant development besides stress adaptation capacity. With research in transcriptomics, scientists could assess the mechanisms of how genes express themselves for basic mechanisms governing significant agronomic characters like yield formation, management, and nutrient use. The proteomic approach strengthens transcriptomics by estimating functional proteins, besides providing data regarding the dynamics of protein interaction and patterns of posttranslational modification. The metabolic profiles from metabolomics analysis display existing plant conditions of physiology, but define basic metabolic pathways that need enhancement for better traits. These omics platforms form a systems biology framework that establishes connections between genetic information and observable characteristics. By integrating different platforms, scientists discover those targeted crop-enhancement genes together with biomarkers and pathways that the genetic breeding methods, together with genome-editing techniques, harness through CRISPR-Cas. Omics technologies are part of key tools in developing crop varieties resistant to climate stresses including drought together with salinity and heat stress exposure. This chapter shows how omics methods transform breeding practices to ensure world food security and maintain environmentally sustainable farming methods.
