For silicon nitride bearings, it is clear that characteristic surface cracks were found on the bearing components under specific conditions. On the other hand, research on crack growth behaviours of bearing balls has not been closely examined. In the present work, we carried out fatigue tests under cyclic compressive loadings to investigate the crack growth behaviours in mode II of the bearing balls. Pre-cracks on the ball surface before the fatigue tests were induced with a Vicker’s indenter. Mode II fatigue cracks on the ball surface were observed and measured until the fatigue life of the bearing ball. In addition, the crack growth lengths were calculated based on the measurement results. Pre-cracks in the approximately parallel direction to the loading direction grew. We concluded that the discretisation of increments of 16 µm square grids of the crack length measurement can recognise mode II crack growth behaviour on the silicon nitride ball surface.

摘要
