The issue of driving under the influence of alcohol has become a pressing concern, posing a significant threat to road safety and traffic regulations. In recent years, several technological solutions have been developed to prevent drunk driving. Such systems include those that prevent vehicles from starting if alcohol is detected. This study aimed to develop and evaluate vehicle telltales to be used with these technologies. A total of 56 individuals, comprising 30 South Koreans and 26 Americans, participated in the evaluation. The evaluation employed indicators of visibility and intuitiveness. The analysis identified symbols consistently selected in the upper group, regardless of country, and characterized their attributes. Nevertheless, certain telltales exhibited cultural differences in interpretation and effectiveness. The procedures and findings of this study are expected to serve as a valuable reference for the design of telltales related to drunk driving prevention technologies. The cross-cultural evaluation underscores the significance of incorporating cultural nuances into the development of universally understood safety telltales, which contributes to enhancing global road safety through improved visual communication in-vehicle technologies.
