This study evaluated the impact of introducing ergonomics as part of an occupational safety and health (OSH) course for undergraduate students at the National School of Public Health in Medellín, Colombia. A total of 12 student projects corresponding to two academic semesters of 2023 were evaluated regarding the application and appropriation of concepts related to ergonomics. Seven of the 12 projects (58%) explicitly identified the different components of the work system. Concerning the three domains of ergonomics, 100% of the projects identified aspects of physical ergonomics. Only six (50%) and five (42%) projects identified aspects of organizational and cognitive ergonomics. The results indicate that physical ergonomics remains the domain most frequently associated with ergonomics. In addition, cognitive and organizational aspects of work are not easily visible for students who are not experts in ergonomics, as they require a greater understanding of the work system. Including ergonomics in the teaching of undergraduate students can increase awareness of the importance of ergonomics as a discipline. Our results show that in a modest amount of time, the appropriation and application of concepts associated with ergonomics can be achieved, albeit limited in scope.
