This chapter will foreground the core contribution of this book—an exploration of the spatiality of post-World War II Australian society through the vehicle of Australian author David Ireland’s literature. As perhaps the pre-eminent Australian author of space, Ireland’s corpus is a treasure trove of spatial representations and knowledge, all of which allow us to understand the spaces and places of Australia and the role of social categories such as class and gender in constituting them. In the midst of the contemporary spatial crisis, this study of Ireland can best be seen as a form of mapping, creating an atlas by which we might plot our past and present and orient ourselves to the future.
