The Conundrum of Integrating Manual and Digital Anthropometric Measurement Methods

Body scanning is a time efficient, precise, and reliable anthropometric data capture method, but digital and manual measurement values often do not align [1-11]. To understand how well a commercial digital measurement extraction software program aligns with current U.S. Army manual anthropometric measurement methods, this study assessed body measurement similarity between 12 manually measured and digitally extracted dimensions from 105 subjects in the U.S. Air Force’s Aircrew Sizing Survey 2011 dataset. Descriptive statistics, adjustment percentage, repeated measures analysis of variance, and allowable error comparisons were computed for each measurement method. Findings indicated that digital circumferences were larger than manual circumferences, while manual lengths were larger than digital lengths, with means differing by up to 39 mm. Results demonstrated high levels of similarity between manual and digital Cervicale Height and Calf Circumference means, suggesting digitally measuring these dimensions may maintain quality and save time. Scan occlusion at the crotch caused significant differences between digital and manual Crotch Height and Vertical Trunk Circumference means, suggesting manual measurement is best for these dimensions.
