The trend of Ageing in Place is on the rise in Indian urban cities, driven by challenges such as limited dwelling spaces with increase in smaller apartment sizes. The older adults are compelled to adapt to the space constraints, mostly in terms of smaller kitchen sizes and functionality. This research aims to identify the parameters that contribute to kitchen design for older adults and assess the impact of physical and cognitive behavioural factors with the spatial organisation on their quality of life and well-being. The study incorporates mixed method investigation on various kitchen typologies through field study employing controlled observation followed by interviews and analysing individual behaviour through the lens of space syntax theory using depthMapX v0.8.0. The study identified the depth value of reaching out spaces such as platform, top and bottom shelves, addressing significant correlation between kitchen spatial layout and task efficiency. The findings of this investigation will help propose novel design principles for kitchen spaces in compact living scenarios ageing in place.

摘要
