Animals are increasingly being used as raw materials for human goods, ranging from food to jewelry and cosmetics, raising concerns about the extinction of many species and the need to preserve and safeguard wildlife for that a relatively advanced field of study called wildlife forensics uses forensic methodologies to handle situations involving animal species and their habitats. This chapter examines the function of forensics and its methods in crimes involving wildlife. Since crime is evolving and becoming more sophisticated, it is necessary for forensics to use increasingly improved methods in order to track down and solve cases involving wildlife, such as poaching, trafficking, hunting, and any kind of destruction of wildlife habitats and species. Forensic pathology, DNA barcoding, and the use of isotopes for species and geographic identification are some examples of these techniques. Additionally, a group of highly qualified and specialized scientists work in the field of wildlife forensics to address various instances and circumstances that may arise in connection with animal species.
