In classical Chinese literature, there was no single word for “神话” ShenhuaShenhua (myth) as we understand it today, for originally the Chinese distinguished “神” from “话” as separate concepts. In his dictionary Shuowen jiezi－the ShiSection, Xu ShenXu Shen of the Eastern HanHan Dynasty explained, “shen refers to a heavenly deity that creates all beings, and semantically it belongs to the shiShi section and phonetically is pronounce as 申 shen; while 祗 means the earth deity that nurtures everything, and semantically it also belongs to the 示 category and phonetically is pronounced as 氐 qi”.
