At first, the vast expanse of oceans encircling the continental landmass might appear as a great hurdle, disconnecting and isolating continents, civilizations, and cultures. However, from a historical perspective, the importance of the oceans is not necessarily a great divider, but more importantly, it served as a medium, connecting different landmasses, civilizations, and cultures through trade, transport, migration, wars, etc. This dimension of ocean connectivity provided avenues for inter-cultural and transcultural amalgamations, forming communities of shared belief, practices, and heritage. Unfortunately, the continent-centric historiography, in general, has undermined the historical importance of oceans as mediums and forces of historical significance, turning to them only when an event of historical significance is linked to an oceanic dimension, such as a military expedition.
