Despite being gifts of nature, hill areas remain marginalised, neglected and diluted in the parlance of architecture, planning, development, infrastructures, services, economy, employment and productivity. The fragile environment and ecology of hill areas continue to be mutilated in the name of development, leading to landslides, flooding and man-made disasters. Tourism is depleting the local environment, ecology, and culture, causing hill areas to lose vitality and resources. Despite occupying more than 18% of the landmass and housing over 11% of the Indian population, hill areas represent a mosaic of nature and human activities. Although ecologically rich, hill areas remain persistently impoverished. Despite possessing valuable resources with enormous development potential, poverty remains pervasive. Though their rich natural heritage, their quality of life remains marginalised. The prevailing dualities and contradictions result from irrational, unplanned, and unscientific approaches adopted for developing hill areas. With their sensitive ecosystems, Hill areas require an equally sensitive, eco-friendly, resource-efficient, and state-of-the-art approach grounded in current technological advancements, on-the-ground realities, and local initiatives involving communities and resources to ensure proper growth and development. Hill areas must be valued, revered, preserved, and protected to benefit humanity, communities and the environment, promoting global sustainability and achieving the goals defined in the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs).
