Nanotechnology in Food Industry: Current Status and Future Trends

Food production, influenced by geographical and topographical factors, faces challenges in meeting demand due to social, technical, and manpower issues. To address this, advancements in food safety, preservation, processing, and packaging are crucial, with nanotechnology playing a transformative role. Nanotechnology has significantly improved food quality, texture, taste, flavor, nutrient bioavailability, and shelf life through nanoencapsulation and nanoprecipitation. These methods enhance nutrient bioavailability, offering better thermal stability, solubility, and long-term preservation while strengthening barrier properties against toxins and pathogens. Innovative nanomaterials in active, improved, and intelligent packaging possess antimicrobial properties and facilitate food pathogen detection. The integration of artificial intelligence with nanosensors for advanced food processing and preservation represents future trends. Nanodelivery mediated nutraceutical and synergistic actions of nanomaterials are anticipated to further protect food products, nanosensors in smart packaging will enable real-time monitoring of food quality. Over the recent decades, nanotechnology has gained attention for its significant impact in food industry, enhancing material properties for agriculture and food. Applications include targeted material delivery, flavor improvement, antibacterial nanoparticles, and consumer awareness. Labeling with nanobarcodes ensures food security and traceability. This review will discuss current advances in nanotechnology and its applications in food-tech, packaging, and security, along with the future opportunities in the field.
