Unearthing the Past: Finding Ancient Kannauj Through Remote Sensing and GIS
摘要
Kannauj, located on a high cliff on the bank of Ganga, emerged as one of the most important urban centres, especially in the post-Gupta period. Unfortunately, the site has barely been excavated. To understand the landscape, this chapter will look at how GIS can add a different dimension to what can be ‘seen’, beyond what meets the naked eye. Complementing the literary sources and archaeological materials, this chapter will attempt to understand the extent of the ancient city and its location vis-a-vis the river Ganga and its tributary, the Kali and the Ishan Nadi on the basis of Digital Elevation Model, Alexander Cunningham’s mapping, and fieldwork. The chapter would thus be an attempt at using satellite images as a historical archive, as they enable us to see the traces of change left on the ground, not only to complement texts and archaeology, but also as independent evidence, serving on its own.
