Kodungallur, a historic city on the coast of Kerala, India, was once a vital hub for maritime trade and fortifications. This study focuses on the Kodungallur fort, examining its location and enclosure through an analysis of old maps, historical records, oral traditions, and excavation reports. By integrating a Dutch-era (1709) map with contemporary satellite imagery, the research aims to reconstruct the fort's original dimensions and assess its historical extent compared to the current ruins. Advanced techniques such as remote sensing and tools like georeferencing have been employed to identify features such as the fortress structure and coastline as represented in sixteenth-century maps. The accuracy of these maps is evaluated by comparing the georeferenced map with modern satellite imagery. Through geospatial analysis, the study has identified crop marks within the fort’s premises which align with features depicted on archival maps; thus, providing valuable clues about the site’s layout. Furthermore, the creation of 3D models and panoramic visualizations of the area offers a deeper understanding of spatial variations when compared to the surrounding landscape. These findings confirm the existence of a man-made fort structure and provide a clearer picture of its historical extent.
