Mapping the Past, Preserving the Future: Integrating Remote Sensing and Geospatial Data with Local Conservation Efforts in Jammu, India: A Case Study of Biyan Tibba

This chapter outlines an integrated methodological framework combining remote sensing with community-led conservation initiatives to preserve Jammu's cultural and archaeological heritage. First, we integrated multitemporal and multisource satellite imagery with historical legacy data to systematically detect, map, and monitor ancient mounds. This remote sensing-based approach enabled a detailed analysis of historical and contemporary land use patterns, which also helped us identify natural and anthropogenic factors contributing to the degradation of the archaeological landscape in the region. Secondly, field surveys were conducted to validate our satellite observations and corroborate each site’s archaeological significance and present condition. Simultaneously, our ground-truthing campaigns documented one localised conservation effort at Biyan Tibba. Here, a distinctive “bottom-up” approach to heritage preservation led by local villagers diverges from conventional top-down agency conservation models, offering an effective strategy for safeguarding cultural heritage that could set a functional example for many other South Asian archaeological contexts.
