Polylactic Acid (PLA) Biomedical Foams for Tissue Engineering

Porous scaffolds made from polylactic acid (PLA) and its copolymers have found widespread use as templates in tissue regeneration research. This chapter explores the various fabrication methods employed to create PLA-based foams. It further delves into their structural characteristics, physical attributes, antibacterial properties, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Additionally, the chapter highlights the diverse biomedical applications of PLA foams, particularly in soft and hard tissue engineering—including uses in bone, blood vessels, muscle, and skin repair. Lastly, it offers perspectives on emerging trends and future directions in the development of PLA foams for biomedical use.
