The construction industry grapples with a longstanding productivity plateau, trailing behind other sectors in innovation, with overall productivity remaining stagnant for over fifty years. In response, there’s a concerted effort to explore technological solutions to bolster efficiency, with Mixed Reality (MR) emerging as a transformative tool. MR seamlessly blends the physical and digital realms, allowing virtual objects to interact with their real-world counterparts. While previously confined to specialized entities, recent breakthroughs like Microsoft HoloLens™ and Apple Vision Pro™ have democratized MR accessibility, making it usable by individuals with varying levels of expertise. Applications such as SketchUp Viewer®, Holo Viewer®, Trimble Connect®, and MS Azure® further enhance MR’s utility by simplifying the conversion of Building Information Modeling (BIM) data into interactive holographic models. These advancements unlock myriad possibilities, from facilitating design and construction assemblies to streamlining project management workflows. This paper aims to explore MR’s fundamental principles, distinguishing it from augmented and virtual reality technologies, and provides a comprehensive literature review to elucidate its applications in construction and allied fields. Through in-depth case studies, real-world implementations of BIM + MR integration is showcased, accompanied by analyses of key findings. The paper examines challenges inherent in MR adoption within the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC), and Facility Management (FM) industries, while charting a course for future advancements.
