This chapter comprehensively presents the achievements of ERLs delimitation. The total area of ERLs delimited is approximately 3.19 million km2, including about 3.04 million km2 of land ERLs (accounting for over 30% of China’s land area) and 150,000 km2 of marine ERLs. Land ERLs consist of optimized nature reserves, areas outside nature reserves with extremely important ecological functions or extreme fragility, and regions with potential important ecological value, with details on their respective proportions. Marine ERLs are divided into areas within and outside nearshore managed waters, each with descriptions of their scope and composition. It also analyzes the critical role of ERLs in maintaining ecosystem functions and ensuring ecological security.
