Carbon Capture in the Asphalt Industry: Technologies, Challenges, and Future Directions

The asphalt industry is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, primarily due to the high energy requirements in its production processes, including bitumen extraction and asphalt mixing. As awareness of climate change intensifies, there is a pressing need for effective carbon capture solutions to mitigate the environmental impacts associated with asphalt production. This review examines the promising approaches to carbon capture technologies, including direct air capture (DAC), post-combustion capture, and emerging innovations such as the incorporation of nanomaterials and bio-based additives. However, challenges remain in the form of technical limitations, economic barriers, and regulatory uncertainties that must be addressed to facilitate wider adoption. Furthermore, the integration of carbon capture with carbon utilization (CCU) holds significant potential, enabling the conversion of captured CO2 into sustainable construction materials. Key insights from ongoing research indicate that overcoming these barriers will require coordinated efforts across industry, government, and academia. Future outlooks suggest that the implementation of supportive policies and investments in innovative technologies will be essential for scaling carbon capture in the asphalt sector, ultimately transforming it into a more sustainable industry. Achieving carbon neutrality in pavement systems is feasible; however, it will necessitate a comprehensive commitment to integrating carbon management practices alongside advancements in material science and process efficiency.
