摘要

This chapter analyses changes in wrestlers’ physiques and their consequences. Comparing pre-war and contemporary yokozuna reveals significant size increases in modern wrestlers. Foreign wrestlers, particularly those from the United States, tend to be larger than Japanese wrestlers. Data analysis confirms average wrestler weight increased sharply after the 1990s, correlating with foreign wrestler influx. Increased large wrestler numbers intensified bout severity, resulting in rising injury rates. Statistical analysis demonstrates positive correlation between weight increase and injury frequency. While size increase contributes to short-term competitive performance improvement, it raises long-term health risks for wrestlers. The Sumo Association strengthened health management systems to address this issue. Globalisation-driven talent diversity elevated competitive levels but simultaneously created new challenges. Physique enlargement transformed sumo’s technical aspects, prompting reevaluation of traditional techniques’ value. The chapter reveals how globalisation’s physical consequences impact traditional sports, offering insights into tensions between performance optimization and health preservation in professional athletics.
