The Influence of Religion on Athletic Performance
摘要
This chapter explores the intricate relationship between religion and sport performance, drawing on the Religion and Sport Performance (RSP) Model to illustrate how faith influences athletes’ psychological and behavioral processes. Religion is not merely a private belief system. For many athletes, it serves as a foundation for motivation, coping, confidence, and emotional well-being. The RSP model identifies three fundamental factors (i.e., religious practices, degree of religious belief, and religious culture) that interact with six contributing dimensions, including coping strategies, religious support, psychological effects, performance outcomes, dietary practices, and mental health and healing. Together, these elements demonstrate how religion shapes athletic identity and performance both on and off the field. Practical implications are provided for athletes, coaches, and sport psychologists, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and supporting the spiritual needs of athletes. This chapter contributes to a growing body of literature that recognizes the powerful and multifaceted role of religion in contemporary sport.
