Recent Trends in the Global Orchid Industry and Export-Oriented Orchid Production System for Developing Nations
摘要
Orchids represent one of the most commercially valuable groups of ornamental plants, with strong global demand for both cut flowers and potted plants. The global orchid cultivation holds significant potential as a high-value floriculture enterprise with strong export prospects driven by increasing consumer demand, technological innovation, and expanding international trade. This chapter explores recent trends in orchid cultivation and export, the barriers and opportunities shaping orchid production, including financial constraints, skill gaps, cold chain limitations, and inadequate laboratory facilities, while highlighting policy measures to strengthen the sector. Advances in protected cultivation, precision climate control, production of quality planting material through tissue culture, importance of alternative substrates, and integrated pest management are discussed for sustainable production. An export-oriented production model has been outlined, it includes detailed stepwise protocols from tissue culture, from acclimatization to harvesting, packing, and cold chain logistics, with emphasis on cost optimization and quality control. This report outlines the regulatory landscape governing orchid exports, including CITES compliance, phytosanitary protocols, and tariff structures, and evaluates the role of free trade agreements in shaping market access.
