Sustainable Uses of Forest-Based Orchids, Cultivation Practices and Production
摘要
Orchids are diverse flowering plants valued for their aesthetic appeal, ecological importance, and therapeutic uses worldwide, which fosters a thriving and expanding global floriculture industry. Distributed across the globe, conventionally, orchids are propagated through seeds, keikis or pseudobulbs. However, slow and labour-intensive process does not guarantee a steady supply of disease-free, seasonally independent plants. Growing demand for floral arrangements, gifting preferences, demand in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries and advancements in propagation technology in in vitro techniques have been able to produce a steady supply of good quality orchids. These efforts have also contributed to the enhanced contributions of developing countries in the global market, while also assisting in conservation of orchids in the wild. Primarily for forest-based and medicinal orchid species, sustainable cultivation and propagation methods are crucial for establishing a balance between economic production and biodiversity conservation. This chapter provides insights supported by recent research demonstrating ethnomedicinal significance, market valuation trends, regional trade flows, and propagation protocols for sustainable use of orchids, offering a comprehensive overview for stakeholders in the orchid industry and conservation.
