Engagement and retention are general concerns not only for programs that aim to widen participation in higher education but also for higher education institutions at all levels. To address the issues, there have been a substantial number of studies, discussions, and theoretical frameworks developed over the decades. However, it remains a challenge to gain a significant increase in student engagement and retention. Furthermore, the elements that influence student success are often intricate, interrelated, and personal; therefore, it is not simple to identify a clear cause of attrition. Although guidance and advising have a demonstrable impact on student success, the most appropriate approach is nuanced and contextualized and thus differs across institutions and student cohorts. This chapter outlines some notable theoretical works on student engagement and retention, provides examples of successful student support, and suggests guidelines to develop an academic advising approach broadly based on practices in a high-enrollment preuniversity pathway program in regional Australia.
