According to the 2020 State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (FAO, 2020), global fish production reached a record high of 178.5 MT in 2018, with marine capture fisheries accounting for a record high of 84.4 MT and mariculture contributing 30.8 MT. However, when considering the health of global marine fisheries and their ability to continue providing food, income and livelihood for coastal communities worldwide, the picture is not so optimistic. Around 40% of the world’s assessed fisheries are fully exploited, meaning that target yields are being obtained but no additional yield is likely, while another 40% of assessed fisheries are overexploited or collapsed, which means that current yields are either unsustainable or have already declined.
