An important part of water management in the downstream sector of the petroleumPetroleum industry is proper handling, treatment and disposal of wastewater generated from refining operations. RefineryRefinery effluent streams contain chemical constituents that may be harmful to human health and toxic to aquatic life. Proper treatment of such streams is essential for safe disposal into receiving water bodies and/or for beneficial reuse. This chapter includes a discussion of wastewater treatmentWastewater treatment in the downstream sector of the petroleumPetroleum industry. This includes the various unit operations and processes that are typically used in a refineryRefinerywastewater treatmentWastewater treatment plant and their working principles. Emissions/odor issues related to each of the relevant unit operations are also discussed.
