Fabrication and Characterization of Hyperbolic Metamaterials

Hyperbolic metamaterials or metamaterials with an extreme (indefinite) anisotropy leading to hyperbolic dispersion profile are one of the current directions of interest in optics and photonics due to their unique optical and material properties. Fabrication of hyperbolic metamaterials incorporates a lot of challenges directly connected with the required sizes of structural features. In principle, fabrication imperfections and nontabulated material properties can deteriorate and even completely extinguish such anticipated properties as increased density of states and support of directional high-k surface and bulk waves. Therefore, only accurate and reproducible nanofabrication routines enable obtaining relevant two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) structures featuring hyperbolic dispersion. In this chapter, we share our experience in the fabrication of such metamaterials. Methods of their characterization with typical protocols of results interpretation are also provided.
