The chapter presents a panoramic view of Israeli demography since the establishment of the modern State of Israel to the present day. It maps the major ethnic and religious groups existing in Israel and traces their evolution over time. Fertility, mortality, and migration, three demographic processes that build populations, are presented in detail. Similarities and differences between Israel, other Middle Eastern and Mediterranean populations, and the Western populations are brought into sharp focus. Israeli population is a prime example of a fusion of the East and the West. This theme cuts across Israeli culture and society, as well across demography of all Israel’s population groups: Jews, Arabs, and others.

摘要
