In this editorial introduction, we set the stage for the Cultural Gerontology section of the handbook by interrogating the social and cultural experiences of older adults in Asia. In doing so, we place dominant Euro-American frameworks of gerontology under theoretical scrutiny, while highlighting the rich ethnographic narratives, cinematic interpretations, and textual analyses offered by the contributors. As such, the contributions in this section extend, disrupt, and challenge the existing critiques on enhanced longevity by paying attention to marginalized perceptions and local specificities of growing old in Asia. Overall, we contend this allows not only for a critical rethinking of everyday subjectivities but also explores the epistemological ambitions of “doing age” from the Global South. Overall, we believe the contributions in this section illuminate ways in which age interacts with shifting cultures of social class, transnational processes, politics, and gender regimes.
