The Year in Review (YiR) offers an overview of key developments in 2024 with significant implications for international humanitarian law (IHL), also known as the law of armed conflict (LOAC). This chapter focuses on major situations of armed violence worldwide, examining: (i) the classification of such situations under IHL, including the determination of whether they constitute international (IAC) or non-international armed conflicts (NIAC), instances of belligerent occupation, or fall outside the scope of IHL; (ii) legal proceedings and jurisprudential developments relating to IHL before international, hybrid, and domestic courts and tribunals; and (iii) notable trends in arms control and disarmament, encompassing small arms, emerging military technologies, and other developments.
