In September 2014, the League of Arab States approved the Statute of the Arab Court of Human Rights, finalising a 20-year process to put in place a human rights mechanism resembling those operating in the other regions. All the regional systems provide a platform for the collective enforcement of treaty rights by States but more significantly, they seek to provide individuals, to a greater or lesser extent, with a possibility of redress for any alleged violations of their human rights. The focus of this chapter is on the jurisdiction of the regional Courts, particularly on the procedural conditions on admissibility. It also examines how the regional systems deal with States wishing to release themselves from their human rights obligations.
