Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has pulled the plug on the decades’ long Russia-EU energy partnership. Dependency on Russian fossil fuels has resulted in a series of debates on the EU’s energy policy and its “strategic autonomy” in energy. These debates also come in the context of maturing demands for renewable energy policies. This chapter aims to shed new light on the EU’s policy choices in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war. To do this, the article will employ two angles. On the one hand, it will review the impact of the REPowerEU plan highlighting EU-wide perspectives. On the other hand, it will consider how energy has been weaponised within the war itself by Russia. By bringing together literature on “strategic autonomy”, energy policy, and energy transition, the chapter will analyse the impact of the war and, particularly, the deliberate destruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on the EU’s own approach to energy security.
