Determination of the pH Range of Potential Borate/Phosphate Buffering Solutions. Part 1. Monocomponent Systems

The industrial production of any nutritional, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, or other chemical product involves a series of technological operations. These are executed using various methods under controlled conditions, with suitable equipment, materials, and energy sources. In this context, pH is one of the fundamental parameters that must be consistently monitored and, if necessary, adjusted by adding appropriate buffers whenever aqueous media are involved in the process. This study evaluates potential buffer solutions based on borate and phosphate systems. The borate system, referred to as B1, consists of diluted Na2B4O7 and H3BO3 solutions in varying proportions. The phosphate system, labeled B2, is based on mixtures of Na2HPO4 and KH2PO4. Both buffer systems were systematically evaluated, including: (i) analysis of the correlations between the volume ratios of the alkaline and acidic solutions and the resulting buffer pH, followed by (ii) determination of their buffering capacities. The analysis showed that the phosphate buffer system can maintain a pH of approximately 7 over a relatively wide range of volume ratios (around 1:1) and exhibits a buffering capacity nearly an order of magnitude higher than the borate system.
