Wound infections are often caused by the proliferation of microorganisms in the damaged skin. The presence of bacterial biofilm in wounds is known to be one of the major reasons for the development of non-healing chronic wounds. Current treatments often lead to failure due to the ineffective antimicrobial agents, and low residence time of topical dosage forms in the wound. Since chronic wounds are a growing challenge for society and healthcare system, novel approaches are searched to find novel treatment approaches. Probiotics and live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) have several important properties for the treatment of wound infections and have shown potential to facilitate the wound healing and fight against pathogenic bacteria. Probiotics can inherently produce antimicrobial agents and can facilitate the infected wound healing through long-acting antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Since probiotics are living bacteria then often traditional dosage forms are not suitable to be used for their delivery. Novel LBPs consisting living bacteria are developed that have specific regulatory requirements to be used for the treatment and improvement of human health. Over the years encapsulation methods have been developed for preparing the probiotic formulations, and recently more and more nanotechnological approaches have been used for developing innovative probiotics-loaded delivery systems for the treatment of wound infections. In this chapter, an overview will be given of the probiotics, novel delivery systems for probiotics currently under development and clinical evidence on such probiotics-loaded delivery systems in wound infection treatment.
