In medical practice legal and ethical bonds have been deemed as necessary since the genesis of medicine itself. After the Second World War the need became stronger than ever. In psychiatry the ethical issues were addressed by official guidelines only since the seventies. This chapter provides a summary of the cultural and historical background that led to the WPA Code of Ethics, as well to the development of national and regional codes of ethics, in particular the one adopted by the American Psychiatric Association, and the one adopted by the European Psychiatric Association. The chapter also provides a comparison among these documents, addressing discrepancies and similarities, and suggesting possible revisions to reduce discrepancies.
