Nationalist Implications in 19th-Century French Performances of Handel’s Messiah

In September 1872, and again the following summer, Charles Lamoureux made a proposal to the committee of the Société des Concerts in Paris for a series of sacred choral concerts featuring music by Handel and Bach. Both proposals were rejected, primarily on financial grounds. But as part of his proposal, Lamoureux made the claim that his idea had “patriotic” significance.1
