Lying: Some Notes on Unconventional Usage

In the early days of the improvising collective AMM, Keith Rowe had been playing guitar in the traditional manner of holding the instrument vertically while sitting. Not long after, Rowe began a process of reorientation, beginning with observations of extended piano technique that created opportunities and openings for avant-garde guitar: “seeing pictures of Cage or seeing Cornelius inside the piano really got me to think of different ways to use the guitar.”1
