We introduce two classes of models: Markov chains and discrete time martingales. These two classes converge in the study of random walks, a central theme of this chapter. An important motivation is the modeling of spatial dynamics, with a particular focus on hitting times, ergodic properties and absorbing or reflecting barriers.
