In investigating the chemical composition of musk, researchers have shown a certain preference—animal-derived musk, in which the perfume industry had a greater interest, was studied more intensively. One of the first types of musk to reach chemical laboratories was that of the Siberian musk deer (Moschus moschiferus), also known as the musk deer (Fig. 1). It is found in the Altai, Mongolia, China, Korea, Siberia, and on Sakhalin Island, and is a species of ruminant with a body length of up to 100 cm and a weight of about 15 kg. The males have a musk gland on their abdomen, in which up to 45 g of a pleasantly scented, oily substance accumulates. This is highly valued in perfumery.
