With an international application, the priority year can effectively be extended. This means that a national grant procedure can be initiated in almost any country in the world 30 or 31 months after the filing date or priority date, with the priority of the international application. Therefore, an international application does not result in a patent, but merely postpones the start of the respective national examination procedure into the future.
