Since 2007, with the support of the Creative Expression Course of Hiroshima Municipal Motomachi Senior High School, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum has been running the A-bomb paintings project, in which volunteer students paint scenes of the atomic bombing based on the memories of Hibakusha, the eyewitnesses. This project has the aim of preserving the memories of the atomic bombing in the form of paintings and passing them down to the following generation. By painting the memories of the atomic bombing and through the paintings themselves, the hope is that the Hibakusha’s desire for peace will be passed on. Based on interviews with former project participants, this article discusses this project’s intentions and results in regard to peace education and its significance for world citizen education.
