Alexander Von Humboldt’s Naturgemälde and Its Impact on World Citizenship Education
摘要
This paper explores the impact of Alexander von Humboldt’s Naturgemälde (nature painting) on world citizenship education. It recounts a personal educational experience in geography class that emphasized the interconnectedness of climate zones, vegetation, and global responsibility. The author argues that Humboldt’s holistic view of nature, derived from his ascent and research of the Chimborazo, laid the foundation for a comprehensive geographical representation that combines scientific and esthetic elements. This approach is reflected in geography textbooks like the Diercke World Atlas, which has evolved to include contemporary issues such as sustainability and human rights. Ultimately, Alexander von Humboldt’s work fosters a broader understanding of the self–world relationship and promotes global thinking, responsibility, and action within educational contexts. This paper highlights the significance of visual representations in facilitating educational processes related to world citizenship.
