The Indigenous people of the Guaraní, who lived all over South America in the 16th century (Monteiro 370), “disappeared under the landslide known as civilization” (Ribeiro, “Brasil: Terra dos Índios” 63; my translation and my emphasis). With the arrival of the European colonizers on the American continent proclaiming themselves discoverers of the unknown land irrespective of the centuries-long presence of its inhabitants, the life of the Indigenous people changed forever and for the worse. This was later also the case for Africans kidnapped from their home region and brought to the harbors of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) and Salvador da Bahia (Brazil) to be distributed as slaves to the various viceroyalties across the Southern part of America.
