My readings on ecocritical sustainable alternative societies contribute to the observation that the act of writing and reading ecological literary utopias can have an impact on the political and societal level (Hiltner xiii). Both analyzed novels, Ernest Callenbach’s Ecotopia and Alan Drengson’s Doc Forest and Blue Mountain Ecostery, have contributed to the academic and public dialogue on ecological sustainability and conservation (see Sect. 2.1.2) by boiling down complex theories in a way that is understandable for all readers. In this regard, Alan Drengson’s work in particular echoes many of the leading ecocritical and deep ecological theories and novels in the field, including Ernest Callenbach’s Ecotopia, Bill Devall’s and George Session’s Deep Ecology: Living as if Nature Mattered, or Arne Naess’ Ecology, Community and Life Style, excerpts of which can also be found in Ken Hiltner’s Ecocriticism: The Essential Reader (2015).

摘要
