Truth and Certainty: On What Foundation Does Thought Rest?
摘要
The following chapter addresses the question of the foundations and conditions of truth claims and their connection to our capacity for knowledge. It is emphasized that our intellectual efforts are directed toward finding certainty, not in the pursuit of truth. Certainty cannot arise solely within thought, since thinking is always related to the world. The source of certainty lies outside our thinking and makes it possible in the first place. The chapter discusses that the basis of our search for truth lies beyond the limits of what can be spoken or thought, and yet enables our thinking. Various theories of truth are presented, with many failing due to their own foundational problems. Western philosophy is torn by this problem, and the question of the causes of the search for truth is regarded as a central foundational issue in contemporary philosophy.
