An interaction that can cause an acceleration of a body is called a force. Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727) was the first to formulate the relationship between forces and accelerations in laws, which constitute the so-called Newtonian mechanics. This was applicable without restrictions for any mechanical problem until the beginning of the 20th century.
