In the seventeenth century, the Italian Jesuit Roberto Nobili (1577–1656), produced a corpus of Tamil Catholic books, as a translation of Catholic doctrine for the Tamil audience of Madurai mission (today Tamil Nadu). The masterpiece of this variegate collection is his last production, Ñāṉa Upatēcam, a huge work consisting of three books. By adopting theories from translation studies, I focus on the process of translation operated by Nobili, compared to his Jesuit predecessors, at different levels: linguistic/textual grids and cultural/semantic grids. In the process of translation, both the missionaries and the local actors had to negotiate linguistic and cultural meanings. My research aims to propose a different perspective of the missionary context where the local agencies are not just passive receivers but they act as cultural brokers. In this way my investigation provides an insight into the early modern South Indian missionary context with its hidden power hierarchies.
