Tocqueville was not an economist, and the problem of poverty was not at the centre of his work. Nevertheless, he considered economic processes and, above all, the problem of industrial poverty as one of the urgent issues to be solved in his time because, for him, poverty and social exclusion posed a threat to democratic freedom and equality.
